About

The Purpose

About half the way through January 2012, I started blogging on a regular basis. That year I challenged myself to write 365 days of blogs, a blog a day. Eventually I ended up with The Songs of Spring, a blog format which basically consisted of me waxing poetic (and sometimes pathetic) on the daily goings-on of my existence.

Fast forward two years, I'm about a year out of the daily blogs and reminiscing about having the commitment to the daily writing exercises. Beyond being an outlet for emotions and thought, The Songs of Spring allowed me to utilize a space that was all mine to practice writing whatever I set my mind to. This is why The Artful Watcher exists.

It is here, at The Artful Watcher that I hope to share bits and pieces of my second favorite kind of writing endeavor - critique. When I'm not constructing personal essays (my favorite writing endeavor), I love to share my opinions about art - from television to film to theater (and sometimes music, too, though I don't consider myself a guru in the area).

So whether or not anyone should choose to read my ramblings, it is here where you will find my uncensored commentary on some of my favorite (and potentially least favorite) experiences from the living room to the cinema. I hope you'll take a look around and enjoy.

The Name

Being clever with names is not my strong suit. However, "The Artful Watcher" came about when I was considering entertainment-related blog names that start with "The." Since my first ever blog was The Songs of Spring, I decided to keep with a theme - that theme being starting the titles of blogs with "The."

"The Artful Watcher," in addition to allowing me to placate my OCD anxiety by utilizing a naming scheme, is also a derivative title from the name of a character from one of my favorite books-turned-musical-turned-film, Oliver!. The Artful Dodger is one of the urchins who aids Fagin, the "receiver of stolen goods" who teaches young boys to pickpocket (two of those boys being Oliver Twist and The Artful Dodger).

I don't plan to pickpocket anyone, surely, but the name had a ring to it. So it stuck. And that's the end of that.

Me

I am a girl and a writer and a recent graduate of university. I don't quite know what I'm doing with my life yet, but until I figure it out - and even once I've figured it out - I will always enjoy having a place to share my thoughts. That's why this blog (and my other blogs) exist.
